ASIS Dubai – April 2018 breakfast meeting

The ASIS International Dubai Chapter, keeping in line with the trends of city it represents, has always been on the lookout for opportunities to be innovative.
Continuing on the “Segment Specific Experience Sharing and Learning” initiative, chapter members met on the morning of 25 April 2018 at the Rove Hotel, Downtown Dubai. More than 70 attendees joined the meeting.
Philip Johnson, PSP, the chapter secretary, presided over the meeting in the absence of chapter vice chair Peter Page, CPP as the chapter chair Dr Abdullah Al Hashimi had sent his apologies as his work commitments prevented him from attending the event . Noteworthy takeaways from this event were:
  • Gus Brecher, director for Cathexis, presented how modern video surveillance is adding value above and beyond security. His presentation outlined how a security budget can be enhanced by looking at other department requirements and fulfilling them to make up the shortfall in an organization’s budget.
  • Sam Samuels, principal consultant, shared the Dubai SIRA Requirements for CCTV and HVM. While SIRA legislation in the UAE is in effect it has not been published for organizations to tailor their security systems for compliance.
  • Dr. Athol Yates and Narmeen Qambar from Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, discussed how security professionals perceptions affected developing a national risk assessment for the UAE. For her studeis, Ms. Qambar used the ASIS monthly meeting to gather individual and group perceptions on risks and their ranking that may challenge the security organizations of the seven Emirates.
Members also exchanged thoughts and explored opportunities for working with universities to encourage students and alumni to join ASIS and pursue their security credentials.
Cathexis, as the meeting sponsor, provided refreshments and the venue – allowing networking and further discussions during the various breaks.

Jan 2018 Dubai Chapter meeting hosted by Intersec

The ASIS International Dubai Chapter was pleased to host its first chapter meeting of 2018 in conjunction with the 20th Intersec Conference, held in the World Trade Centre in Dubai, and to also welcome ASIS members from the Abu Dhabi Chapter.

The chapters were hugely excited to welcome Don Randall, MBE as the guest speaker for the evening. A former City of London police officer, managing director at JPMorgan Chase and the first CISO of the Bank of England, Randall is the chairman of numerous organisations and initiatives and was awarded an MBE for services to law enforcement, a Security Excellence Award, and the International Police and Public Safety 9/11 Commendation Medal. He is currently an advisor on cybersecurity, legal and regulatory, physical and technical security, international close protection, preemployment screening, risk management, counterterrorism, transnational criminal activities, asset recovery, and fraud investigations.

Randall spoke about trends in international terrorist and cyber activities, as well as partnerships to assist prevention, detection, and recovery. The presentation was particularly salient and informative and was very well received. Randall interspersed his presentation with examples and lively anecdotes from his career, which served to bring his points vividly to life.

Following the chapter meeting, members and guests were cordially invited to the Intersec VIP Reception, which was held adjacent to the meeting. This invitation provided numerous networking opportunities to members, as well as the chance to catch up with old friends and acquaintances.

The next Dubai Chapter meeting is planned for the morning of the 21st of February 2018 where the chapter looks forward to welcoming Dr Athol Yates from the Institute for International and Civil Security at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, who will be facilitating a mini-workshop on expert versus crowd assessed threats. Other speakers and sponsors are currently being sought.
